The Journey Begins. Day 1 & 2.

Hi I’m Dex. I heard the lady at the shelter say my sister Dori and I are between 7 and 9 months old.  We spent most of our lives at the shelter. We were there so long that we cannot remember what life was like before we arrived there.  The folks at the shelter were very kind to us and let us have cages right on side of each other. My sister Dori is kind of shy so I do all the speaking for her. Things weren’t bad. We had a bowl full of food and water, plus we were able to talk to each other every day.  The ladies at the shelter would always tell us that one day our person would come. So every day when the people came we would do our best to perk up and look good as the people marched past and took home Siamese, Persians, Calico’s and Tuxedo cats. But no one ever wanted to take home the two little orange tabbies. Dori began to get sad, but I told her not to worry, that one day it would be our day.

Last Thursday they moved us from our normal cages into another room. I could hear all of these new voices, they took pictures of us, and told us to keep calm in our new cages. We could tell something was up. Dori was sick and her eye had been shut for a day or two. I was worried. I didn’t want to have to go in that back room. The back room that animals went in and never came out of. We went to sleep and told each other that it would be okay.

The next morning was Friday and the shelter was rustling earlier than usual. There were new people everywhere shuffling paperwork and making lists. I was waiting to see if we had found our person. Maybe it was finally our turn! A nice shelter lady came and took me from my cage and placed me into a pet carrier. I was so excited! I was going home! Maybe my person did come for me! Then I got nervous. What about Dori? I waited patiently until the carrier door opened and the lady placed Dori with me. I was so very happy. Our carrier was placed in a car with 2 other carriers containing four of our  shelter friends. All day we drove, for what seemed like forever, making stop after stop until finally we were the only 2 left. The car came to a stop and the nice lady said okay guys your foster mom is on her way. A few moments later we heard a car pull up. The lady moved us from one carrier to another. The lady patted my head and said its okay boy you are safe now. Dori and I decided it was okay to take a nap.

Foster Home

The lady came and took the carrier from the car and walked towards a building. We couldn’t make it out much because it was so dark. The door opened and we went into a room. The lady sat down the carrier and opened the door. The room was huge! Bigger than any cage then I had ever been in!  I laid on the floor and stretched my body out and Dori did the same. The lady put out fresh food and water. Then she showed us our litter box. A few moments later and the lady dashed in again. This time she had some other objects with her. As Dori ate I was brushed and the lady put something in my eyes…..she kept saying it would make the infection go away….then she put some stuff on my back. She told me the stuff on my back was to keep the fleas away, and of course I was okay with that.

Once that was done she took out a small bag that had a ball in it and she rolled it to me so that I could investigate it for her while she took care of Dori.

The lady left the room and told us she would be back. We were too excited to sleep and we started to investigate every inch of the space. A few moments later a man entered the room with the lady and they had a man child with them. The man child had this thing with him and told us he would read us a story. I sat really close so that I could hear it well. The story was about a dog named Jingle that had no home. The man child said that Santa helped find Jingle a home and that Santa would help find us a home too. I can’t wait to meet Santa.

Day 1-Saturday

Our first day was very exciting. The man child came in again and showed us a game on his toy.  The game has a rope that swings back and forth. I tried to catch that rope! We played until the lady came in with breakfast and to put that stuff in our eyes again. I hate that stuff. The man child, who they call Peyton,  brought us several other things to do like a mouse that squeals, a stick with feathers on it and a thing that you scratch on. The lady told us she is going to help us find a home. Dori and I took turns laying in her lap while she petted us. I am worried about Dori though. She cannot run and play like she use to. She said she is tired and her belly hurts. I hope she feels better soon.

Day 2 –Sunday

Today I saw a window. It was the first time I had ever seen one and at first I was very afraid of it.  Peyton was looking out of it and I decided it couldn’t be that bad if he was doing it. I can see lots of things from a window that I had never seen before. Our room has many windows and I have a favorite window in the corner. I saw an animal run past. Peyton said it was a squirrel. I would really like to get my paws on that! Foster lady came in today to check on Dori and felt on her belly for a long time. I guess she could tell she was not feeling well. The lady felt something in her belly move. She said she was going to call the vet. I hope she feels better soon.  I really like having attention from people, I really like playing with Peyton and I really love windows. Dori’s eye is open again!  I cannot wait till Santa and my foster mom help me find a forever home!
